— Gudrat Bey, new high-profile corruption scandals have come to light in Ukraine, following which the Prosecutor General fled the country. How would you characterize the developments in Ukraine?
— Ukraine is fighting to preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity while simultaneously carrying out important work to build a state governed by the rule of law. The establishment of a democratic, rule-of-law state entails major difficulties and a struggle that has continued for decades. There are nations that grow weary of this struggle, lose heart, and ultimately succumb to dictatorship and corruption. The Ukrainian people are still fighting.
Unfortunately, values associated with democracy, human rights, and individual freedoms are being discredited even in Western countries, while corruption and authoritarianism are spreading. A few days ago, CNN published the results of a Gallup poll conducted in the United States. Eighty-nine percent of American respondents believe that corruption is widespread within the country’s government institutions.
In Ukraine, prosecutorial authorities have been instrumental in exposing schemes involving the misappropriation of funds belonging to Ukrainian and European citizens through various fraudulent operations conducted via call centers. Recently, Minister of Internal Affairs Vilayat Eyvazov spoke by telephone with his Ukrainian counterpart, and I am certain that this issue was also discussed. If we played a role in exposing these schemes, that is very good, and I hope we did. After all, citizens of our country are among those who have suffered the most from this fraud.
Unfortunately, corruption scandals in Ukraine are being used by certain political circles, particularly in the United States, as a means of exerting pressure on Ukraine. They are seeking to force Ukraine into accepting a capitulationist peace.
